The Asian American Journalists Association announced today that veteran journalist Maya Blackmun would serve as interim executive director.

Maya worked at The Oregonian in Portland for 21 years, covering a number of beats as a staff writer. She is heading into 22 years as an AAJA member, and has served the organization in a number of posts, including the past two years as co-chair of the MediaWatch Committee and several terms on AAJA’s Advisory Board and Governing Board.

“I’m honored and eager to serve AAJA in a time of challenge for the journalism industry and to diversity in newsrooms and news coverage,” she said. “I know that together we - AAJA’s members and staff, in partnership with media organizations and the Asian American Pacific Islander community - remain steadfast to our mission while making the most of new opportunities.”

“We’re incredibly excited to have Maya Blackmun leading AAJA,” said Sharon Chan, AAJA National President. “She is smart, thoughtful and passionate about our mission of diversity in journalism and fair and accurate coverage of the Asian American community.”

The AAJA Governing Board today announced the departure of Ellen Endo as executive director.

“Ms. Endo worked diligently on behalf of AAJA and demonstrated a strong dedication and commitment to its mission. However, philosophical differences over AAJA’s vision and direction have led to this mutual decision,” said the announcement. “We extend our appreciation to Ms. Endo for the time she devoted to help guide the organization and offer our best wishes for her continued success.”

AAJA will launch a search for a new executive director this summer.
